Marble and lime floor

Some unpredictable friend's connections bring the opportunity to experiment with an antique building technique to make a floor: the "terrazzo alla Veneziana" involving a layer of marble pebbles strongly compacted into a lime based gravel mix.

Here some of the many many phases of the work...

The first layer of lime mortar gets spread out.

Roughly leveling the surface as it gets seeded with a set-mixture of colored marble bits.
This is a very simple way of covering the most of the floor except from the center of the room...

Using a cardboard mask such as this hexagonal module, it's possible to mark some areas and distribute selected colors...

A more sturdy material like hardy wood or metal could be used over and over to repeat the same pattern but in this case, since the space is soo small we decided that we would use it only once... and anyway it didn't survive the amount of moisture that it quickly absorbed.

The final result of the floor will take months to manifest after curing...
